There will be two of these essay questions on the exam and you have the option of choosing one of the two to answer if you choose to complete the essay option.

1. Explain Congressional Reconstruction by the Radical Republicans. How was Congress able to pass these policies? Why did Congress want Southern states to go through Reconstruction again? Did the president support this policy? (and who was that president?) How did the President's view toward this policy affect his political career? How did the Supreme Court contribute to Reconstruction? How and when did Reconstruction end? What was the legacy of reconstruction? Give examples and be specific in your answer.

2. The Industrial Revolution in the United States really expanded after the Civil War--why? What benefits came out of Industrialization? What problems developed? How was the relationship between workers/employers during this time? give examples. What was happening by the end of the 19th century regarding the ideas behind industrialization? Be sure to include specific examples in support of your answer.

3. Politics during the post war period, was sometimes referred to as the Gilded Age—why? How much policy difference was there between Republicans and Democrats during this time? What other types of factors distinguished the political parties? Take one president from that time frame, and tell me about his administration, including party affiliation, and what successes and failures he had in his administration. Use examples and specific information whenever possible.

4. Starting in the late 1800s, the US began to take on an expansionist/imperialist role in world affairs, both militarily and economically. Discuss the new role of the United States in World ffairs. What factors helped to contribute to this change? What forms did this expansionism/imperialism take? Describe US actions in other areas of the world (especially Asia and Latin America) and the changes in our foreign policy. In your answer be specific, using examples when possible.
