Chapter Two Information and Links

The following topics from Chapter Two are important and exam-worthy:

  • Phrenology and its relationship to neuroscience
  • Action Potentials, Inhibitory Neurons, Excitatory Neurons, the Synaptic Cleft (Gap), Dendrites, Axons, Refractory Period(s), Myelin, Nodes of Ranvier, and Multiple Sclerosis
  • Neurotransmitters, related drugs, & medical conditions (Especially: SSRI's and Serotonin; Benzodiazepines and GABA; Acetylcholine and Alzheimers);
  • The autonomic nervous system including the basic functions and characteristics of the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system
  • Neuroanatomy and basic brain structures such as the medulla, pons, hypothalamus, reticular formation, thalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, anterior cingulated cortex, cerebellum, and the four lobes of the cerebal cortex.  (Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, and Occipital)

Chapter Two Links

Being able to recognize the following drugs as benzodiazepines, and knowing that they affect the GABA receptors, and that improper withdrawal from them can cause seizures, could be helpful for Exam One:

  • alprazolam (Xanax)
  • bromazepam (Lexotanil)
  • diazepam (Valium)
  • lorazepam (Ativan)
  • clonazepam (Klonopin)
  • temazepam (Restoril)
  • oxazepam (Serax)
  • flunitrazepam (Rohypnol)
  • triazolam (Halcion)
  • chlordiazepoxide (Librium)
  • Being able to recognize the following drugs as SSRI's, and knowing that they primarily affect the serotonin receptors, and that are prescribed as treatment for depression, could be helpful for Exam One:

    • citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil, Emocal, Sepram, Seropram)
    • escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia)
    • fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex, Seromex, Seronil, Sarafem, Fluctin (EUR))
    •  fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin)
    • paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat, Rexetin, Xetanor, Paroxat)
    • sertraline (Zoloft, Lustral, Serlain)
