Test on Chapters 9-12.

Make-up tests given today.

All late assignments due.

Handouts:

Design Project

We will follow the design process to complete a design for a client of your choice.

The design project will encompass at least three adjoining or grouped rooms of a client's home. Examples include:

  • Kitchen, breakfast room, living room
  • Bedrooms and adjoining bath
  • Entry, dining, half bath

Project can be new construction or remodel (most likely remodel). Projects with a smaller scope of work will be graded more critically than those with a large scope of work.

The steps of the design process will be documented in a project notebook.

Client Recruitment

Students are responsible for finding their own clients.

Your client can be a neighbor, friend, or family member, but not someone you live with (you cannot live in your own project house).

The project must be something the client actually wants to do, though not necessarily immediately.

The client must take this project seriously.

The client must be available to come to class for their presentations, and must be willing to give honest opinions, both favorable and critical.

The project cannot be discussed with the client other than during the client interview process.

For this project, the Project Agreement (linked above) will take the place of the standard letter of agreement.

Project Statement

The project statement is typically the definition of the project. The project statement ensures that the client and designer agree on the scope of the project. Example:

The purpose of this project is to design _____ for _____.

Major goals of the design include _____.

Primary constraints on the design are _____.

Include only the core information, not the details. Those will be discovered during the client interview.

Programming

The Programming stage of the design process is when necessary research is completed. The client interview is done and the space is measured, sketched, and photographed. Sketches would include plans with dimensions and elevations as needed to show size and placement of windows, doors, cabinetry, etc.

The designer would also complete legal research, including:

  • site jurisdiction
  • required permits, fees, and inspections
  • applicable codes

We will not be completing legal research due to time restrictions.

The result of the Programing stage is the analysis of the research and the decision on the feasibility of the project. Can what the client wants (Project statement) be done?

Assignments:

  1. Find your client for the design project. Complete interview and research. Begin the project notebook with the following items:
    • Project agreement
    • Project statement
    • Research for Programming stage: client interview, pictures of the space (3-5 images), sketches with dimensions

Project notebooks will be turned in for first grading on Monday, 3/22. Do not put originals in the notebook (keep originals, turn in copies).

  2. After Spring Break, we will do an assignment on presentation techniques. We will use the design sketch from the last test in the assignment - the living area with reading space and desk, using our classroom as the space. To prepare for the assignment, complete your design, select furnishings and finishes, and draw the design plan to scale. You will need 2 copies of everything that you would use on your presentation board. Note - the room design itself will not be graded, we are simply using it to discuss presentation. The items will be needed on 3/24.

Wednesday, 3/10

Work day for client interviews.

Enjoy Spring Break!
