Residential Design Project - project introduction

The design project will encompass at least three adjoining or grouped rooms of a client's home. Examples include:

  • Kitchen, breakfast room, living room
  • Bedrooms and adjoining bath
  • Entry, dining, half bath

Project can be new construction or remodel (most likely remodel).

There is no minimum/maximum requirement for project scope; however, simpler projects will be critiqued/graded more critically than complex projects.

See the Course Calendar for the project timeline. Client presentations will be 4/6-4/8; contract documentation will follow client approval of design.

Client Recruitment

Students are responsible for finding their own clients.

Your client can be a neighbor, friend, or family member, but not someone you live with (you cannot live in your own project house).

The project must be something the client actually wants to do, though not necessarily immediately.

The client must take this project seriously.

The client must be available on either 4/6 or 4/8 for their presentations, and must be willing to give honest opinions, both favorable and critical.

The project cannot be discussed with the client other than during the client interview process.

Assignment:

Recruit your project client. Complete and sign client agreement. Due Wednesday.

Wednesday, 3/4

Project Statement

The project statement is typically the definition of the project. The project statement ensures that the client and designer agree on the scope of the project. Example:

The purpose of this project is to design _____ for _____.

Major goals of the design include _____.

Primary constraints on the design are _____.

Include only the core information, not the details. Those will be discovered during the client interview.

Programming Phase

Programming includes research and analysis of the project goals.

Client interview -

Site research

Legal research - ascertain the jurisdiction of the project, and acquire the contact information for the code department or official for the jurisdiction. Research what is required for the jurisdiction based on the scope of the project. Examples:

  • What code is used?
  • What permits may be required, and at what point in the design or construction process? (see document When is a Permit Required, City of Plano website)
  • What fees may be required?

Assignment:

Complete the following by Wednesday, 3/11:

  • Project statement
  • Client interview
  • Site research
    • Plan drawings with dimensions
    • Elevation drawings with dimensions
    • Photos of site
  • Legal research
    • Site jurisdiction
    • Applicable building codes
    • Contact information for building code department

Monday, 3/9, will be a work day to complete these phases of the project. All information must be neatly and profesionally written. Photos should be printed with descriptive captions included. Print, staple, and turn in copies (no originals) of these documents on 3/11. Projects will be discussed in class.
