Week 7 Notes

Review Day & Complete the House scene.

Save a clean copy of the completed house before you begin furnishing.

You may want to open a new file and reference the house file into it. Import the furnishings into this new file. The reasoning behind this is that the file size will start to get very large if everything is in one file. Referencing allows you to have a file for the house and a file for the furnishings.

To furnish the house, import/merge models of the furnishings. You may need to Group imported models as soon as they are imported, as many models will contain several separate objects. Grouping will make it easier to select the imported objects.

Merged objects will often need to be scaled to fit, since they may have been created using a different unit, or were not created actual size.

There are several models on the 3D Models page and on the I drive. You may also download models from several free sites; see the 3D Links page for a few sites to check.

Remember to clean up any models before using them in a scene; open/merge/import the downloaded file (depending on the filetype) nad remove lights, camera, and any unneccessary objects, test render to check materials, then save the file. If there are missing materials, use the UVW Remove utility from the Utilities panelm to strip off all materials before saving.

Kitchen cabinets may be created with simple boxes, as long as they don't require a lot of detail. Use a separate box to create the countertop. If using a sink, you must punch a hole in the countertop and cabinet to match the size of the sink. Either Boolean subtract or delete faces to create the hole.

Rugs and artwork can be made by creating boxes or planes, and attaching a material using images of artwork or rugs. You can make frames for the artwork with a loft, a boolean, or by box modeling (edit mesh).

Artwork images can be found at www.art.com or other sites that carry posters or artwork. The site www.homedecorators.com is a great resource for rug images. Save the image and use it as the Diffuse map in a standard material.

Assignment:

Furnish the completed house. All objects should have materials or simply be the correct color (not all objects will need the detail of a material). The house should look complete, not too sparse, but don't go overboard.
