Standard Materials
Applying materials
Loading materials from objects
Materials exercise 1
Open the file eggs1.max. Create a Standard material for each egg. Try the different shaders and other settings on the Basic Parameters rollout. Name each material and apply each to an egg.
Materials libraries
Material/Map Browser
Open a material library
Apply a material from a library
Save a material to a library
Merging libraries
Materials exercise 2
Open the practice file eggs2.max. Open the Material editor; use the Get Material button to open the Material/Map browser, then open the 3dsmax.mat material library. Select 6 materials and load them into the material editor. Attach the materials to 6 eggs.
Open the db_sample material library on the I drive, and do the same for the other 6 eggs. See configure paths below if the materials don’t display.
Create a new material library on your H drive and save the materials in the scene to the library. Reopen the eggs1.max file and add the materials you created to your material library.
UVW maps
UVW Map modifier
UVW Map Exercise
Open the practice file star.max. Apply a brick material from the standard library. Apply the UVW Map modifier; change the mapping type to see how each affects how the material is attached to the object’s surface. Try changing the size and tiling.
Materials and file management
Configure paths – refer to “Adding a file path” in Online Resources handout
Customize > Configure Paths > External files > Add
Resource Collector utility – used to gather all files used in a scene together into a single folder. Make sure to check Include Max file and Update materials.
File > Archive > Resource collector or
Utilities panel > More button > Resource collector
Archiving – similar to Resource collector, but creates a .zip file that includes all files used in the scene.
Assignments:
- Read Chapters 8 and 10 in the Visualization Curriculum Student Workbook. Complete the exercises in Chapter 10.
- Open your furniture file from Week 3 (the one you made from the image). Apply realistic materials to the furniture using materials from the Max libraries. Apply the UVW Modifier to the objects to control the material mapping. Group everyything into a single object. E-mail a copy of the completed file to ssutphen@ccccd.edu before the start of class next week.
Note - you might want to use Boolean union to clean up the objects made with multiple parts. Each object should have a single material.
- Make sure the walls, doors, and windows of the house are completed by next week.
