Special Project

         The United States is one of the most diverse countries in the world and is becoming more so.   This assignment involves learning more about other people by comparing your thoughts to theirs.  In this project you will take the role of a candidate for the U.S. Congress.  As such, you are interested in the opinions of voters and will carry out a survey as described below.  Your project must be completed and turned in at the beginning of class on the day of the first exam. 

To complete your project you must do the following (in order): 

  1. Answer the questions below and record your answers in writing.
  2. Select three different classmates to interview. (Your selections must vary in gender, race, country of origin, and age.)
  3. Ask your classmates the same questions you answered and record their answers.
  4. After you have finished your interview share your answers with that classmate and discuss with them why your views might have been different or the same.
  5. Ask that person if they would vote for you or not and why.
  6. Summarize what you learned from your classmates and comment on whether or not you were surprised by what people’s real attitudes were versus what you may have perceived them to be. 
  7. Comment on what you might do or change to get more votes.
  8. You project must include your questions, your answers, your classmates’ answers and your summary.  It must be typed.
  9. The project should be submitted with a paper cover containing your name and class section stapled to the other pages of the project.  No other cover is necessary, nor will it get you a better grade.

  1. What is your age?
  2. Where were you born?
  3. What is your cultural background?
  4. What do you do for a job or do you do something else?
  5. Do you consider yourself liberal, moderate, or conservative?
  6. What is something about yourself that you think others would never guess?
  7. What injustice in the world makes you the most angry?
  8. What issue concerns you most about this country?
  9. What are the best things about the U.S.?  What are the worst things?
  10. Ask a question of your choice?
