Humanities 1301
Introduction
to the Humanities
Professor Rich DeRouen
I teach Humanities 1301 (Introduction to the Humanities) for Collin College, both in the classroom (at the Central Park Campus, in McKinney) and online (through WebCT, the official online course platform for Collin). This course focuses on the history and nature of human creative expression. It explores values, attitudes, and ideas by examining humankind's cultural achievements from a variety of time periods, art forms, creators and cultural traditions. In the course, we explore the interrelationship of cultural history, philosophy, literature and the arts using readings, Internet research, discussions (either in the classroom or online), and critical writings or creative projects. The required textbook for this course is Landmarks in Humanities, by Gloria K. Fiero. You should be able to find it in all Collin College campus bookstores (ISBN 0073207268). Please be aware that this is a relatively new textbook; all Humanities 1301 courses at Collin began using this textbook for the first time in the summer of 2005. (We no longer use The Humanistic Tradition, which was the course textbook for several years).
