This EXTRA CREDIT assignment is identical to the mandatory Museum Report.
Visit a local art museum (see list).
Write a short reflective paper about your experience.
*This visit must take place during the time-frame of this course.
Choose a museum from the following list (click on the links), or request approval to attend a different one.
Requests must be submitted in writing (email preferred).
$5 student admission ― free admission Thursdays 5-9pm & the first Tuesday of the month

$8 admission ― free admission Thursdays 5-8pm
$5 student admission ― free admission 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month
ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION
1) turn-in proof of your visit in class (ticket, program, receipt, photo, supplemental sketches, etc.)
2) submit a short, reflective essay detailing your museum experience and addressing the questions below via WebCT.
ESSAY OBJECTIVES
Respond to the following questions in developing a thoughtful, personal essay.
This essay should convey your unique perspective on your museum experience.
1) Explain your first impression of the museum.
Include your background: are you generally interested in art, or is this a new for you?
This assignment aims to broaden your appreciation of art and the humanities,
whether you are an art connoisseur or have never entered an art museum.
2) Detail the different areas of the museum.
What exhibits and collections did you preview? Which held the strongest appeal and why?
3) Describe 2 pieces of art had a strong positive impression on you.
Look for pieces that surprise you in some way.
Explain your reaction. (Include the title and artist, or description and period, for each piece.)
Use detailed language to describe the physical characteristics of each of these pieces,
and to explain what you think prompted your reaction.
Consider how "culture" influenced the techniques and ideas used to create this piece of art.
4) Describe 2 pieces of art had a strong negative impression on you.
Look for pieces that surprise you in some way.
Explain your reaction. (Include the title and artist, or description and period, for each piece.)
Use detailed language to describe the physical characteristics of each of these pieces,
and to explain what you think prompted your reaction.
Consider how "culture" influenced the techniques and ideas used to create this piece of art.
5) In your conclusion, apply your personal observations to topics discussed in humanities.
How does "culture" influence what people create?
Consider "art", media, government, social trends, politics, etc.
How would your apply the concept of art and invention to American culture?
What qualities, values, themes, images, ideas, trends, technologies, etc. represent
contemporary American culture?
