Creative Project

1) Create an original self-portrait (choose one of the options below).

This should be an original and subjective expression of your identity, rituals, values, philosophy, history, expectations, etc. ...

 

Projects will be presented informally in-class.

 

AND

 

2) Compose a 2-3 page artistic statement (submitted via WebCT).

 

 

point value: 100

 

 

Options: Self-Portrait

    OPTION 1: 3-Dimensional Collage/Assemblage

1) Use materials creatively (photos, newspaper, drawings, paint, buttons, hair, labels, etc.).

2) Use a variety of materials in your creation. (There is no limit to the materials you can use.)

3) Your collage should take 3-dimensional form, like a sculpture.

4) You mount mount materials on a found 3-D object, or create a 3-D object using your materials.

5) Your assemblage may hang or be a self-supporting artwork.

6) AVOID: excessive cutting and pasting from magazines.

7) AVOID: "white" (empty) space.

 

 

OPTION 2: Word Collage/Performance Art

1) Write a poem, monologue or song that expresses who you are.

2) There are no stylistic limitations. (However, this is not an "easy" option!)

3) Be prepared to perform or recite your creation during your presentation.

4) Be prepared to turn in all notes, sketches and drafts related to your composition.

5) Be prepared to discuss your compositional choices (literary devices, language and content).

6) You may (but are not required to) present your word collage as a multi-media performance.

7) AVOID: extremely short and/or careless compositions.

 

 

Instructions: Artistic Statement

1) Create a 2-3 page personal essay demonstrating the efforts you applied to this assignment.

2) Use a standard essay form: intro, thesis, well-developed supporting points, conclusion.

3) Describe the inspiration for your project.

4) Explain the process of creating the piece (time, resources, ideas, sources, etc.).

5) Include at least 3 "artistic influences" and explain the role of each in the concept/development of your self-portrait.

6) Include at least one source of information for each "influence".

    For this assignment, information obtained through informal sources may be cited.

    For example, conversations, emails, and personal observation may be cited if properly documented.

7) Document all research: Include attributions in essay paragraphs and a bibliography.

    (MLA format preferred.)

8) Submit written statement via WebCT.

 

All cases of plagiarism will result in a grade of zero.

GRADING RUBRIC

A

Both self-portrait and artistic statement meet all objectives outlined above.

Unified essay: clear thesis and substantial supporting details.

Include 3 "artistic influences" in explaining your inspiration and/or process.

Accurate information and responsible use of sources.

Detailed language and descriptions.

Very few (if any) errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, or word usage.

All sources attributed in paragraphs, and listed in an MLA works cited bibliography.

Deficient in at least 1 of the above criteria.

 

C

Deficient in at least 2 of the above criteria.

 

D

Deficient in at least 3 of the above criteria.

 

F

Deficient in at least 4 of the above criteria.
