Guide to Problem Solving:
NEVER give only numerical answers for word problems, ALWAYS answer the main problem with complete sentences.
Pretend that you are working for a company and they ask you to resolve an issue/problem/situation. How will you solve it? Why did you approach it that way? You must present your solution to your boss and explain why your answer works and makes sense.
I must read the problem carefully (read it over if needed)
Did I understand what the situation is in its entirety and what important information is given to me?
What is my goal? What unknown(s) do I need to solve for? What units must it be in?
What is given to me? Is there a pattern? Do I need all the information given to me?
Can a diagram, linear graph, other graphs/pictures, or symbols help me with outlining the problem?
I must make sure to keep my work organized, clear, keep correct units, label, and ALWAYS check my work!
I’m not done yet! What does this solution mean? Does it make sense with the situation? If so, how do I interpret it with respect to the situation? (refer to first two paragraphs of this guide!)
Can I now defend my solution to the problem?
Note --> you may need other scratch paper to think out a (or more) thought process(es) first before actually writing the chosen one to resolve the problem.
