bulletMRMT 2333 Syllabus Fall 2009

Welcome to MRMT 2333
Medical Transcription II

Medical Transcription II allows you and your professor a unique opportunity to take advantage of the latest technology and techniques in distance learning.  MRMT 2333 offers interactive features that will make your experience comparable to that of a traditional classroom student at Collin College, while providing online flexibility and convenience.

MRMT 2333 Medical Transcription II is an electronic, interactive class with a professor, students, and assignments. You will access the course via the Internet from a computer at home, work, or on campus--anytime, day or night, that you have access to the Internet. Even the Orientation information is presented via the Internet.  It is the next-level continuation of the MRMT 1307 Medical Transcription I course, so you should be familiar with course  procedures and requirements.

You should have completed POFT 1307 Proofreading and Editing prior to taking this course.  It is now a prerequisite.  Therefore, if you have not yet completed POFT 1307, please enroll in that course now, so you can take it during the same semester you are completing MRMT 2333.

How does this course differ from a traditional campus course?

As soon as you enroll, access Orientation information through the MRMT 2333 course link on Professor Baird's homepage (http://iws.ccccd.edu/lbaird) and then monitor it frequently until classes begin.  Updates will be posted there, so you can see them before classes begin.

Because your course website is on Blackboard, you will not have access to your course until classes begin.  It can take a while to upload all students into classes at the busy start of the semester.  Your schedule allows for that time, so you will not be behind.

What you can and should do right away is to purchase the required course materials as follows (NOTE: Materials are changing this semester!)

TEXTBOOK

HPI – SUM Program – Beginning Medical Transcription, 2nd edition, for licensed SUM customers (Collin purchased the initial expensive license). Dictation CD and foot pedal (no textbook as such).  Purchase from Collin bookstores for best price.

(May be available online at http://www.springcreekcampusbookstore.com by clicking “Purchase textbooks” in lower right side of screen.  May need to enter ISBN number for pricing and availability.)

REQUIRED REFERENCE BOOKS

The AAMT Book of Style for Medical Transcription, Claudia Tessier, 3rd edition (important to have this edition), 2002, American Association for Medical Transcription (now Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity), ISBN 0-935229-38-8.

Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book 2003, 10th edition (or most recent edition available), Drake and Drake, 2006, ISBN 1416002952, W.B. Saunders Company (publisher).

OPTIONAL REFERENCE BOOKS

Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, Donald Venes, editor, 19th edition, 2001, ISBN 0-8036-0654-0, F.A. Davis (publisher).

SOFTWARE

MS Word 2007 for Windows is the recommended software for transcribing and submitting assignments for this course.  Do NOT use Works, WordPad, or Notepad.

If you do not keyboard by touch (without looking at your fingers), then take POFT 1329 Beginning Keyboarding first, which will include MS Word software basics.  If you keyboard by touch (perhaps had typing in high school) but want MS Word training before or while taking Medical Transcription I, then enroll in POFT 2301 Intermediate Keyboarding, which includes using MS Word instruction and a helpful handbook.

SUPPLIES

Disks of your choice for backing up assignments files.  Do NOT delete any course assignments or files until the course is finished and the final grade has been posted.

EQUIPMENT

Foot Pedal:  Select USB port connection  The foot pedal replaces the need for a standard cassette transcription machine.  It is recommended that you purchase the HPI foot pedal from Collin bookstores or from HPI (http://www.hpisum.com).  It is also available at many online stores.

Head Phones: You will also need comfortable headphones for use with your computer.

Your online classroom includes medical record format guides for each medical specialty, lecture notes as needed, a wide variety of medical records to transcribe from physician dictation, and Book of Style quizzes. A weekly schedule will keep you on track for each chapter/specialty.  A detailed list of documents required will guide you through assignments on a chapter-by-chapter basis.  Instructions will include how to submit assignments as attachments to Blackboard and the required saved file name for each document.

An important success objective of this course is your development of the personal self-discipline and work habits necessary to produce medical documents on a weekly basis, as you will likely do on a daily basis when managing your own home-based medical transcription career or when performing transcription in a medical office.

Your online professor will work with you one-on-one via Blackboard to evaluate your assignments and to help you with questions or problems.  Your assignments will be scored electronically and returned to you as attachments via email.  You may be required to evaluate certain compared assignments yourself and provide that quality-assurance feedback to your professor as part of the learning process.  Grading will include professor comments, as appropriate and/or helpful.

How do I access the MRMT 2333 Medical Transcription II class?

First, you must be officially enrolled.  Once classes begin, you should go to http://cougarweb.ccccd.edu and follow login instructions there. Once you have access, all email communications and submission of assignments must be within Blackboard.  [Exception:  If you have questions that are not about course work, such as advising for enrollment, career questions, etc., those questions should be emailed to Professor Baird at LBaird@ccccd.edu, where an advising folder is maintained for guiding you over time toward the completion of your educational goals.  Please use an email subject line that reflects the message content, such as Enrollment Questions.]  Please be patient with the process of adding all students to the many Blackboard classes at the busy start of each semester!  The professor's homepage contains a link to the Blackboard course site.

Once classes begin, you will be expected to check your Blackboard email and Blackboard course information often.  Frequent communication between professor and student is important to your success in this course.

What is the MRMT 2333 course like?

After registering for the class and purchasing the course materials, you will:

  • communicate regularly with your professor via Blackboard email
  • study the Blackboard site information
  • follow the schedule of assignments in proper sequence
  • complete the transcription assignments for each specialty, remembering to follow the format guides on Blackboard
  • submit transcription assignments on schedule to verify production skills
  • complete a professionalism assignment (most easily accomplished by becoming an active student member of The Greater Dallas Area Chapter of the American Association for Medical Transcription--a good networking source for job leads after graduation).

YOU are responsible for scheduling your study time and completing your assignments. You are responsible for keeping up to date with the course schedule, marking the course weeks on your calendar, and keeping a record of the assignments you have submitted. The production grade component will reflect whether your work is submitted in a timely manner.  Your professor is available to help you through the course by email; please do not hesitate to contact your professor. Your professor acts as a facilitator to help you master the course goals.  What you gain from the course experience largely depends on how much study you personally devote to the course work.

Realize that this course requires YOUR motivation, commitment, organization, and self-discipline. YOU must supply those success factors. Effective learning results only when students become active participants in control of their learning and take the initiative to do what is necessary. Learning the skills necessary to communicate in an online course format will be a valuable bonus to you in preparing for working in high-tech environments.

MRMT 2333 Medical Transcription II is a competency-based course. To be evaluated, you must meet certain performance objectives, which are found in the course syllabus. Your final grade will be based upon your participation and your performance on the required course components.

Again, welcome to the class!
