A great deal of information
follows. I highly recommend you print a hard copy and read through it two to
three times to make sure you absorb the content.
The Language of Medicine, Davi-Ellen Chabner, 8th
edition, with animation CD, 2007, Saunders (an imprint of Elsevier
inc.), publisher.
On-site, face-to-face
classes do NOT require the publisher’s access PIN. The ISBN for that text with CD is
978-1-4160-3492-6.
Online students
must have the one-time-use publisher’s access PIN to use the Blackboard course
website. The ISBN for that text with CD
and PIN is 978-1-4160-3477-3. Online
students purchasing a used text must also purchase a new PIN as a companion
for the used text.
NOTE: PIN CODES:
PIN codes are used to authenticate your access to a book on STUDENT
CONSULT. Each PIN is unique, seven characters long, and can only be used to

code under a scratch-off panel in one of the following places:

the inside back cover

correctly.
If you are having any difficulties reading or entering your PIN code, please
contact our customer service team at studentconsult.help@elsevier.com.

the materials available and use the order form for your shopping cart.
Medical
Dictionary. This is
not required, but strongly suggested as it is a great tool.
Access to a
reliable computer with internet and email capabilities. Medical Terminology is an electronic and
interactive class. This means you will need either Netscape Navigator or
Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you do not have one of these you can use the
college computers for your course work.
You will not have access to your
course until classes begin, please note it may take a couple of days to upload
students, but the course is designed to give everyone a few days to get
uploaded and familiar with the course. You will not fall behind in course work.
The web address to access this
course is http://ce6.ccccd.edu.
Once webservices has granted access to Blackboard, you will need
a Username, Password, and Access Pin number to enter our “virtual classroom”.
* The Access Pin number can be found on the brochure which accompanies your
textbook.
* If you are using
a used textbook, you will need to purchase a separate Access Pin number.
The “classroom” is a virtual classroom through Blackboard. Once you are able to
access the class through Blackboard, please click the icon titled COURSE
ORIENTATION, FIRST CLASS DAY REQUIREMENT and take the time to read each page in
this file.
The next available icon is COURSE
DOCUMENTS. Under this link you will be
able to find the Orientation Survey, Quizzes/Exams and the individual
Modules. By clicking on the Quizzes/Exams
link you will be able to view the quizzes and exams for this course.
Please note the difference between quizzes and exams. The quizzes
are a great tool in preparing for the exams. You may take the quizzes as
many times as you like and they will be available throughout the entire
semester. The quiz scores are NOT recorded. Exams, on the
other hand, can only be taken once and will close at the end of the week
assigned. The grade you earn on the exams will be recorded. Keep in
mind though, computers are not perfect and some errors may occur during
grading. If you feel that an error was made during grading, please email
me with the exam number, question(s), and an explanation as to why you feel
there was an error.
Finally, the remaining links are for the individual Modules. There is
information in these links regarding each chapter’s elements.
Additionally, within each module are some excellent interactive
activities for you to complete. These
activities will provide you with feedback based on your performance. Please keep in mind that these activities are
made available to help you learn the material.
Scores are NOT recorded.
The final link on the course’s
homepage is CHAPTER VOCABULARY LISTS.
These chapter lists are made available to you for help in learning the
vocabulary words in each chapter.
At the left of your screen is the
Course Tools menu where you can link to the assignments, calendar, syllabus and
more. The assignments (homework) will be
released to you via Blackboard every Monday morning. You will need to download
the assignment to your computer, complete it, and then upload your answers to
Blackboard no later than 8 pm on the due date. (Please make use of the
Calendar function for due dates.) Some
assignments cover more than one chapter and count as one grade for homework;
HOWEVER, there are individual exams for each chapter. For example, the
first homework assignment covers chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4. One grade will
be recorded for this homework assignment. There are however, four different
exams, one for each chapter, and four separate grades will be recorded for the
exams. Be certain to plan and allow yourself time to
complete all four exams by the deadline of 8 pm on the due date.
Also under Course Tools are links to Discussion and Mail. PLEASE NOTE that these two avenues of
communication work very differently. Please use the mail function when
you need to send information or correspondence to just one or a handful of
people. The discussions function is used for sending information to
everyone in the class. Anything you post in the discussions area will be
viewable by everyone! Please do NOT post any personal information here.
You will want to get in the habit of checking both areas on a regular
basis.
In My Tools, located below Course
Tools, you will find links to My Grades and My Progress. The My Grades link will allow you to view
your grades at anytime during the semester. Please keep in mind that
homework grades will not appear until ALL students have completed and submitted
their work. You can also view your grade and any comments made regarding
your homework assignment by accessing it in the Assignments screen.
If you are NOT able to access the
class through Blackboard, by August 31, send me an
email at
Computer Problems:
If you have a
computer problem you can contact The Online Support Services by going to their
website: https://d2.parature.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4120. In order to respond more quickly to your
email, please be sure to include your full name and the name of the course you
are trying to access.
I cannot be responsible for
problems you experience with your computer. If you are concerned that you may
have trouble, then I suggest you use the computer lab at the college and do not
wait until the last minute to complete chapter exams and homework assignments.
I do allow one excused computer problem. This can be used for one exam or one
homework assignment. It can be used only one time and does not include the
End-of-Semester Extra Credit Exam or Final. The End-of-Semester Exam is offered
for extra credit points.
Your
Instructional Team:
In an attempt to make all online courses
as equal as possible, the instructors for medical terminology have worked as a
cooperative unit in preparing your virtual classroom and its contents. All online courses for medical terminology
will look and work the same.
Consequently, do not be concerned if you happen to see another
instructor’s name located in the contents of your course.
