Lab Assignments

English 1302

Dr. Joan Kennedy                                                                                  Name____________________________

The student must complete 10 units of credit from these activities in order to satisfy this lab requirement (25 points).  No partial credit is given.  If you wish to obtain extra credit, you can complete more projects than the ten-unit requirement.  You will receive the unit amount assigned to each activity.  Students may complete a maximum of 10 units extra.

As you complete each lab assignment, hand it in to me for evaluation.  When I return it to you, I will check off each lab activity on this sheet.  The final due date for all lab work is:_________________________________.  Hand in this lab sheet on that day so that I can record your work.

STUDENT MUST COMPLETE 10 UNITS FROM THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

1.    Write a paragraph in which you explain the value of literature by focusing on a literary work that has been  enjoyable or meaningful.  Don't worry about defining literature correctly.  The aim of this exercise is to begin reviewing the values you hold as you read a work that you regard as literary.

                                                                                                                 2.0 units________________________

2.    Visit a Web site that includes reader's comments about particular works of fiction.  A good example is www.amazon.com, a commercial, online "bookstore."  Choose a novel or short story collection on the site that readers have commented about a lot.  Then, write a brief response in which you identify the values that seem reflected in the comments.  In what respects, apparently, does literature matter to these readers?  What do they evidently hope to find in it?

3.    Read Eudora Welty's short story "A Visit of Charity" (MLM 94-98).  Write your reaction to it off the top of your head, spending at least ten minutes on the response.  Note any personal experience affecting your response as well as one or more questions that you have about the story even after you have finished reading it.  Remember that question-posing is a good way to prepare for a formal paper on the story, enabling you to identify issues worth writing about at length.  The Reporter's Formula questions, who, what, where, when, why, how, also are helpful in gaining insight into the story's details and implications.
