Essay—Re-writing the Fairy Tale or Nursery Rhyme

Essay should be at least three to five pages long, and please follow MLA format.

Choose a fairy tale or nursery rhyme and re-write it. Have fun with this assignment and be creative.

If you want, put dialogue in the story and use descriptions for setting and characters. You want the reader to see the setting and characters.

Be sure to keep the basic outline of the fairy tale or nursery rhyme, and then manipulate the story while keeping the basic premise. In other words, you want your reader to recognize your chosen fairy tale or nursery rhyme.

Please do not write anything offensive or racist.

Same basic rules apply for this story: watch your introduction, conclusion, evidence, and thesis statement, which may or may not be stated.

Here are some suggestions for re-visioning your piece:

1. Does your fairy tale or nursery rhyme really require a happy ending? Can you make it tragic?

2. Can you put your piece in modern times or even an alternative universe?

4. Role reversals? Cross-dressers? Sure.

3. Sex, drugs, violence? You can put these topics in your story but only if your story calls for them. Please do not put pornography or graphic violence; it usually weakens the story.

4. It’s best to think how outrageous you can make the story, and then start writing.
