Each student will make a class
presentation as a member of a group.
There will be a random assignment of students to groups at the
beginning of the semester. In order to
maximize the preparation time, the presentations will be made over the final
four chapters in the book during the final three weeks (April 19th through
May 3rd) of the semester. Each group will select a topic/issue over these
chapters to present to the class during their assigned class period.
It is important that each
group select a topic/issue that excites the members of the group. That will generate greater excitement for
the individual members of the group and thus provide for a stronger
presentation. Each group should select
the format (method of presentation) that best fits the personality/style
of the members. Remember, this is your
presentation. Be creative,
entertaining, and informative.
grading criteria:
(1) ORGANIZATION
To be effective, the material
must be presented in an organized manner, that is, there should be NO
sudden shifts of topics, but rather a smooth and clear transition of
information. Decide what it is you want
to present to the class and stay on target to achieve your goals.
(2) CLARITY
To be effective, the material
must be presented in a clear and concise manner, that is, make
certain that your audience understands all terms and/or concepts. If necessary, provide definitions and/or
examples of all critical terms/concepts. To be successful, it is essential that
your audience understand your message.
(3) CONTENT
To be effective, the content
must be presented in a professional manner. The members of the group should consider themselves to be experts
on their topic (preparation will afford the members of the group that
status). It is important that the group
present depth in terms of content. As a
suggestion, each group should select a relatively "narrow"
topic area so that the group can cover a particular topic in depth rather than
overextending itself by briefly covering a great deal of information. Don't overwhelm your audience with a great
deal of material, but rather select an important topic and present that
topic in a thorough and conclusive fashion.
(4) STYLE
To be effective, each group
must work well together, that is, teamwork is essential for a successful
presentation. This includes the coordination
as well as the organization of the activities of the presentation. Remember you are teammates, working together
to provide the best effort.
