Prerequisite: Freshman Composition/Rhetoric I and II

Textbooks: The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces I, seventh edition

Course description: This course introduces the student to a variety of literary histories from the classical Greek period through the seventeenth century. Students will read representative selections, analyze, and discuss philosophies and cultures.

Final exam: Wed. Dec. 12, 11:00 a.m.

Method of Evaluation:

40%: Exams. Students will take the mid-term exam in the Testing Center at any time during the ninth week and the final exam in the classroom.

20%: Response papers. Using the response paper topics listed in Weekly Assignments, write a one page typed response. The grade will be based on the thoughtfulness of the response; the response paper must be in my hands before we discuss the particular topic; in other words, I want you to read the material assigned and respond to the topic question before we discuss it in class; therefore, I will not accept any late journals, but students may skip any two journals. Of the eight assigned, only six are required.

40% Essays: 2 essays, typed, 3-4 pages long.

Late essays: 5 points off per day; I will not accept an essay more than 2 days late no matter what the excuse unless you make arrangements with me before the absence.

Attendance: After eight absences, excused or unexcused, you must drop the class. I will no longer accept work turned in after eight absences.

Withdrawal date: Nov. 16. Please remember that dropping is an administrative procedure. Your instructor cannot drop you. Failure to withdraw from a class will result in a final grade on your transcript of F.
