Josquin, Plainchant, "Pange lingua." The Tallis Scholars, Dir. Peter Philips; Soprano: Sally Dunkley, Deborah Roberts; Countertenor: Robert Harre-Jones, Timothy Wilson; Tenor: Rufus Muller, Nicolas Robertson; Bass: Donald Greig, Francis Steele. Oxford: Gimell Records Ltd., 1993.

Josquin's "Pange lingua" chant was originally intented as a hymn for the feast of Corpus Christi. This chant was a late work, perhaps his last mass-setting, not published until after his death in 1539 (Peter Philips, 1986, 1993).

Pange lingua gloriosi

corporis mysterium

sanguinisque pretiosi,

quem in mundi pretium

fructus ventris generosi

Rex effudit gentium

Obis datus, nobis natus

ex intacta Virgine

et in mundo conversatus,

sparso verbi semine,

sui moras incolatus

miro clausit ordine

..........................

Kyrie, eleison.

christe, eleison.

Dyrie eleison.

O my tongue, proclaim the mystery

of the glorious body,

and the precious Blood,

which the king of all nations,

the fruit of a noble womb,

poured out to redeem the world.

Given to us, born to us from a pure virgin,

having dwelt in the world

and scattered the seed of the Word,

he concluded in a marvellous manner

his life on earth.

................................

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.
